“When I have a terrible need of — shall I say the word — religion. Then I go out and paint the stars.”
Van Gogh

I had an argument with a priest the other day about the necessity of reading God’s word. We discussed that of all things in life we could take to excess and detriment reading scripture was not one of them. “But lately that’s become my nausea”, I said. For I was trying to express that I needed a moment alone with the universe and my private thoughts. A moment alone with God absent the contamination of another’s story and history. I wanted to go out and paint the stars, so to speak. But all that vexed him deeply; and I felt as though he didn’t have enough confidence is his own private world to allow me to enter mine.
